- Introduction
- 1.1 These regulations should be read in conjunction with the General Academic Regulations for undergraduate degree here in under referred to as the General Regulations.
- Qualification for Admission to the Programme
To qualify for registration a prospective student must satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements.
Have a minimum of pass at 'A' level in Mathematics and passes with a Grade C or better in five 'O' level subjects including English Language.
or
- Have a teacher's Certificate of Education or Diploma of Education with Mathematics as a major subject and passes with a Grade C or better in five 'O' level subjects including English Language.
- Registration
- 3.1 Registration shall normally be held at specified times in accordance with the provisions of the General Regulations.
- Course of Study
The programme is general degree in
- Mathematics
- Statistics
- The degree programme will be part-time and will be conducted through distance education methods normally over a minimum period of four years and a maximum of 8 years. The minimum – maximum periods allowable permit some degree of flexibility in terms of student course loads per semester as well as student progress through the programme in keeping with Open Distance Learning systems.
- The teaching – learning system will comprise specially prepared printed materials as the main medium of instruction supported by audio and video materials, face-to-face tutorials and any other distance education methods.
- Each course will be covered by one or more modules containing content materials equivalent to 60 contact hours.
- Each student is required to do a total of 32 courses (16 in Mathematics and 16 in Statistics) of which he/she has to pass at least 28 (14 in Mathematics and 14 in Statistics) in order to obtain the degree.
- A student is required to pass all core courses in Mathematics and Statistics in addition to others bringing the minimum number to courses passed to 28, in order to obtain a degree.
- Not all courses listed in Regulations are necessarily offered in any one academic year.
- Date of Examination
Examinations for courses in the Bachelor of Science Mathematics and Statistics Degree will normally take place at the end of each Semester.
- Admission to Examinations
To be admitted to the examinations for the degree programme, a candidate must:
- Have registered as a student of the Zimbabwe Open University in accordance with the General Regulations.
- Have satisfactorily completed the course requirements including submission of assignments (coursework).
- Scheme of Examination
- Each course shall be examined by a three-hour written examinations plus coursework unless otherwise stated. The degree will be classified on the examination results of all parts.
- Candidates will be required to pass at least six courses in each part, but may proceed to the next part of the programme carrying at most, two courses.
- The weighting for the final overall assessment shall be as follows:
Coursework 20%
Written Examinations 80%
- Supplementary Examinations
Supplementary examinations may be allowed in accordance with the provisions of the General Regulations of the Zimbabwe Open University.
- Classification of Results
- The classification of the examination results shall be in accordance with the General Academic Regulations.
- All core courses will be included in the calculation of the degree class.
- Courses shall be weighted by multiplying the marks for Part 1 by I, those of Part II by 2, those of Part III by 2 and those of Part IV by 3.
- Award of Degree
A certificate for the BSc Mathematics and Statistics Degree under the Seal of the Zimbabwe Open University will be delivered to each successful candidate in accordance with the provision of the general Regulations of Zimbabwe Open University.
