Faculty Welcome Note (Dean)

I want to welcome you to the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences, which is the fastest growing Faculty and thank you for showing interest in the programmes we offer. The Faculty’s main thrust is high quality programmes, using current up to date learning materials and research which strengthen training and ensures programmes are informed by latest evidence.

The Faculty of Applied Social Sciences was established in 2007 with only three Departments, namely; Counselling, Psychology and Special Education.  To date the Faculty has grown to include three more departments, namely;

Information Science and Records Management

Development Studies

Peace Leadership and Conflict Resolution

Special Education has been Disability Studies and Special Needs.

The Faculty is now offering seven undergraduate courses which include a diploma in Disability Studies. We also offer, three Master of Science degree programmes.  The Departments run short courses in Sign Language, Braille, Basic Counselling Skills and Project Management.

To date we have been accrediting certificate and diploma courses offered by the Zimbabwe Institute of Systematic Therapy (CONNECT) and the RATN (Regional Aids Training Network) short courses on HIV and AIDS. This is done to strengthen the capacity of individuals and other organisations in response to HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa and beyond.

Mission Statement

The Faculty of Applied Social Sciences is committed to serving the greater community through research and the provision of free counselling to students thereby supporting the University’s mission.
The Faculty of Applied Social Sciences prepares candidates for positions in fields that include academic teaching and research, diplomatic and international service and professional public service.
