Welcome to the Higher Degrees Directorate of the Zimbabwe Open University. Higher Degrees Directorate, is an equivalent of the School oaf Postgraduate Studies in other universities. Higher degrees (MPhil and DPhil) are the natural next step for those engaging in knowledge generation and who are leaders in the creation of knowledge through research. We work across disciplines to help tackle global challenges and apply this knowledge for the prosperity and well being of humanity. We provide a conducive atmosphere for students engaged in knowledge generation under the watchful eye of seasoned academics who teach and supervise them. In a knowledge society, the ability to create new knowledge is often at the heart of any organization's competitive advantage.

Programmes Offered

The Directorate offers two degree programmes through research.

  • Masters of Philosophy Degree (M/Phil)
  • Doctor of Philosophy Degree (D/Phil)

Entry Requirements:

M/Phil Studies Entry requirements:

  • Two certified copies of each of the following:
  • Undergrad degree (2.1)
  • Abstract of the undergrad research project.,
  • Transcript of the under grad degree.
  • O' level certificate.
  • A' level certificate (if any).
  • National Identity Card.
  • Birth Certificate.
  • Two copies of a Research Proposal (Topic of your choice).
  • Degree tenure: Two-five years.
  • Fees: Year one= RTGS$ 1515.00
  • Year two to five years=RTGS$ 1495-00
  • Registration for Higher Degrees is throughout the year.
  • Application fee of RTGS$30.00.

D/Phil Studies Entry requirements

Two copies of each of the following are required: All copies of certificates must be certified.

  • Research proposal  (ZOU House Style) on a topic of your choice -14 to 20 pages.
  • Abstract from  your Masters Degree
  • Masters Degree transcript.
  • Masters Degree certificate.
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Bachelor’s degree transcript
  • O and A 'Level Certificates (A 'Level Is not mandatory).
  • National Identity Card.
  • Birth Certificate.
  • Application fee of RTGS$30.00
  • Registration for Higher Degrees is throughout the year.
  • Application fee of RTGS$30.00

Fees structure:- Year 1: =RTGS$1515.00 locals and RTGS$2096 non- locals.

                       Year 2=   RTGS$1495.00 locals and RTGS$2076 non- locals

                      Year 3 = RTGS$1495.00   locals and RTGS$2076 non- locals


Only fully paid students are registered in Higher Degrees

Registration is throughout the year.

Degree Tenure: Minimum of 3 years and maximum of 8 years

Catchment Area for supervisors

The Directorate has the following catchment areas for both supervisory staff and its candidates,

  • Zimbabwe Open University Staff
  •  Local Accredited Universities
  • SADC Region
  • Other Nationals outside those labelled above.

Supervisory Capacity

The Directorate has a wide pool of supervisors both from within the Zimbabwe Open University and other universities locally and abroad.  Currently the Directorate has fifty (50) Professors and 140 Doctors in its pool of supervisors.
