I attribute my success story to the Zimbabwe Open University, empowerment through open and distance learning, that is “earning while you earn” thrust.

The flexibility of their studies enabled me to become a teacher from a security guard. Age is not a hindrance; poverty is not a hindrance. Just pursue your dream with the formula: hard work plus determination plus prayer and you will reach your aspirations in life. It has always been my dream to finish my studies and wanted to be a teacher because I have developed a special affection for children. Education is a good course to deal with students and you can really change their lives.

I hope my story will inspire others to thrive hard to live their dreams, knowing that someone like me was able to achieve something as wonderful as this.

My name is Joseph Palanjeta a ZOU alumnus who graduated with a Diploma in Education in 2017. I started off as a security guard before becoming the qualified teacher, I am today. My secret lies in the Zimbabwe Open University, empowerment through open learning, that is the “earning while you earn” thrust.

I faced many challenges along the way in fulfilling my dream. It was never easy, I couldn’t get enough sleep as I juggled between my work, my studies and family time.  I took everything, one step at a time. As a security guard I would take my module to my night shifts when there was less traffic at work.

At one time as I was walking home I almost blacked out, for about five minutes I couldn’t see, so I had to sit beside the road for a while, afterwards I recovered and walked home.

Financial challenges took a stroll later especially having to make charts for teaching aids. I had to be innovative; I went to a local supermarket to pick up cardboard boxes for use in that regard.

Age is not a hindrance; poverty is not a hindrance. Just pursue your dream with the formula: hard work plus determination plus prayer and you will reach your aspirations in life.

Teaching has always been my passion, more so, it has always been my dream to finish my studies and become a teacher because I had developed a special affection for children.

Education is a good course to deal with students and you can really change their lives.

It is my hope that my story will inspire others to thrive hard to live their dreams, knowing that someone like him was able to achieve something as wonderful as this.
