vcWelcome to Zimbabwe Open University where we empower the world through high quality open and distance learning enabled by technology.  We live in a time where Higher and Tertiary Education in Zimbabwe is undergoing significant transformation riding on the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), Government vision 2030 and the Education 5.0.  Technology promises both wondrous and profitable possibilities, profound disruptions and unimaginable results. Traditional intellectual fields are shifting and converging. Public expectations and demand for higher education keep intensifying. In the same environment, our University, the premier Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) in Zimbabwe, promises to excel beyond imagination.


The Zimbabwe Open University is riding on its Strategic Plan 2019-2023 that mainstreams e-learning. This has resulted in the change of ZOU’s vision and mission. Our vision now reads, “To be the university of choice in open and distance e-learning” and our mission reads, “Empowering the world through high quality open and distance learning enabled by technology”. Our mission and vision will enable ZOU to contribute towards the innovation/modernisation and industrialisation agenda of our nation.


Because we are an ODeL University, the affordances of technology are critical for us

to deliver on our mandate. Advance pedagogical technologies such as smartboards, e-classrooms and video-conferencing equipment, among other technologies, will be availed to support this techno journey the University has embarked on. This envisaged strategy is in line with that of the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development.


In everything that the University does, we will be guided by two main buzzwords excellence and quality. Our strategic plan reveals the need to place the student at the centre of our mission and improve service delivery. Our student, our number one ambassador, must be proud of ZOU. This can only happen when we prioritise excellence and quality. In this regard, the University now has a Client Service Charter in place, showing our commitment to quality customer service. This gives both our employees and clients, indications of what to expect from ZOU.


My tenure will be guided by a management philosophy based on ethical synodical leadership that is consultative, transparent and accountable, and characterized by clear communication with all stakeholders. It is, therefore, my humble appeal to you all, that we work together as one. We are stronger when we are bound together with unity of purpose. If the great Rabbi and founder of the Christian Church, Paul of Tarsus, was the Vice Chancellor of ZOU he would have said, “The University is a unit, though it is comprised of many campuses, faculties, directorates, centres and departments. And although it comprises many units, they all form one entity” (1 Corinthians, 12:12). He would have gone further to say, “And as each individual unit does its work, the whole University grows and builds its reputation and brand” (1 Ephesians, 4:16). Not one of us can be effective without the support of the other. United we stand, divided we fall. Together, we can make a difference, so sayeth your own Paul today!


The period ahead will surely and squarely bring its own challenges, the University is prepared to recalibrate itself, ready to move forward together with all stakeholders. When our core values and actions are in alignment, a new and thriving culture emerges: a culture of valuing each other. Then, and only then, can we realise our vision, “to be the University of Choice in Open and Distance e-Learning”. I have a firm belief that, I can count on each one of you to give your best in order to raise ‘brand ZOU’ to be an envy among institutions of higher learning in our country and the wider region

COVID-19 measures

The University has a Health and Wellness Committee, to give the University technical advice with regard to COVID-19 and other health matters. Covid-19 Awareness information has been posted on the University website.

  • To ensure compliance with social distance, the University is using video conferencing and big Blue button technologies in conducting meetings.
  • The University encourages cleaning of hands frequently with alcohol based hand rub or soap and running water.
  • Covering nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with tissue or flexed elbow.
  • Avoid contact with anyone with cold or flu like symptoms.
