DEANS - FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE, FACULTY OF APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES AND FACULTY OF COMMERCE AND LAW

Applications are invited from suitably qualified, experienced and highly motivated professionals for Dean of Faculty posts that have arisen in three (3) Faculties at the Zimbabwe Open University. The post of Dean is a strategic position which requires a person of high personal and professional integrity, with a distinguished record of academic achievement and leadership.


POST A.         DEAN, FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE (1 POST)

POST B.         DEAN, FACULTY OF APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES (1 POST)

POST C.         DEAN, FACULTY OF COMMERCE AND LAW (1 POST)

 

The Dean will be responsible for the overall management of the daily operations of the Faculty. The Dean will report to the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs.

The posts will be for a four (4) year contract which may be renewable on the basis of performance.                 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participating in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the academic policies of the University;
  2. Positioning the Faculty within the national higher education policy and transformation as well as introducing STEM related programmes;
  3. Overall planning, development, renewal and changing of academic programmes to ensure meaningful academic outcomes, quality, effectiveness and financial viability as well as obtaining the necessary approval of the Faculty Board, the Teaching and Learning Committee and Senate;
  4. Leading the Faculty in initiating effective Open and Distance Learning (ODL) delivery systems and e-learning pedagogy;
  5. Providing academic leadership in the areas of teaching, learning and ODL materials development;
  6. Setting up the necessary structures that will ensure that the research in the Faculty is relevant and of high quality in line with the University’s research policy;
  7. Initiating and promoting ethically accountable research of quality and increasing research output including patents and copyright;
  8. Establishing a sound culture of innovation and commercialisation in the Faculty;
  9. Promoting the University’s wide initiatives;
  10. Developing a sense of community for the Faculty students, academic and support staff;
  11. Mobilising resources for the Faculty and University;
  12. Marketing the Faculty nationally, regionally and internationally;
  13. Developing intra and inter Faculty interfaces to enable programme horizontal and vertical articulation to multi-skill students;
  14. Ensuring that departments in the Faculty engage in research projects to contribute to new knowledge experience in the area of open and distance education and as part of service to the community;
  15. Creating and maintaining linkages and relationships with external stakeholders ie. Industry and commerce, professional boards etc. for the benefit of students, staff and the University as a whole;
  16. Fostering and maintaining sound personal and professional relationships among the members of staff and between staff and clients;
  17. Periodic reporting on the activities of the Faculty as well as usage of facilities and financial resources;
  18. Undertaking any other duties as and when required by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs.

QUALIFICATIONS

POST (A)

  1. A minimum of an earned PhD in Agriculture, Crop Science, Horticulture, Soil Science, Animal Science or any closely related field;
  2. A Professor in a discipline related to Agriculture would be preferable;

POST (B)

  1. A minimum of an earned PhD in an Applied Social Sciences field such as Psychology, Sociology, Development Studies, Special Education, Counselling, Peace and Governance or Records and Archives Management.
  2. A Professor in a Social Sciences field or any of the areas indicated in (B) 1. above, would be preferable;

POST (C)

  1. A minimum of an earned PhD in a Business related discipline such as Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Management, Business Leadership or Marketing;
  2. A Professor in any of the disciplines referred to in (C) 1. above, would be preferable.

EXPERIENCE

  1. At least three (3) years post qualification experience in an academic institution of which two (2) years must be at the level of Chairperson or above; and
  2. Proven knowledge and experience in Open and Distance Education.

  5. Strong academic leadership skills; and
  6. Ability to motivate and mentor staff and students.
