FARM MANAGERS (3 POSTS)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified, experienced and highly motivated candidates to apply for the post of Farm Manager (3 Posts) which have arisen in the Zimbabwe Open University. This is a strategic position which require a person of high personal and professional integrity. One with a distinguished record of achievements in the major activities of farming including, but not limited to, agronomy, horticulture and animal husbandry.

The position therefore calls for a versatile, respected individual with a proven record of having managed a farm or farms purely on business lines.  The Farm Manager will report to the Pro -Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Enterprise Development.

This is a one (1) year contract position with prospects of renewal depending on performance.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.         Running the University farm purely on commercial lines;

2.         Articulating finance and production plans to ensure farm progress whilst operating within the allocated                        budget;

3.         Supervising practical activities such as the use of agricultural machinery, feeding livestock, spraying fields                  etc.;

4.         Continuous improvement and monitoring of quality of yield for both crops and livestock;

5.         Purchasing farm supplies such as fertilizers, chemicals and seeds;

6.         Arranging for the maintenance and repair of farm buildings as well as machinery and equipment;

7.         Mentoring staff and monitoring their performance;

8.         Marketing produce from the farm;

9.         Monitoring animal health and welfare, including liaising with the Department of veterinary services;     

10.       Maintaining a knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat                them;

11.       Applying health and safety standards across the farm estate;

12.       Protecting the environment and maintaining biodiversity;

13.       Keeping up to date financial records;

14.       Understanding the implication of the weather and making contingency plans;

15.       Ensuring that the farm activities comply with Government regulations; and

16.       Performing any other functions as may be delegated by the Pro Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and                enterprise development)

Qualifications and Experience

 1.        A Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or related field such as Agriculture Engineering, Crop

           Management, Farm Business Management, Animal Science, Agriculture Extension or Horticulture;

 2.       A National Diploma in Agriculture is an added advantage;

 3.       A minimum of two (2) years post qualification experience at Farm Manager level;

 4.       Proven hands-on experience in the management of a farm, farms or farming estate;

 5.       Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills are essential;

 6.       A class four Driver's License is a must.
