The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is a dedicated Open and Distance Learning (ODL) state University in Zimbabwe established in 1999. The mandate of the University is to empower people through Open and Distance Learning. ZOU has ten (10) Regional Campuses in Zimbabwe, with a Regional Campus located in each Province of the Country. In addition, the University has a Virtual Campus which caters for international students. The Council of the Zimbabwe Open University is inviting suitably qualified, experienced and highly motivated candidates to apply for the position of Pro Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Enterprise Development) which has arisen in the University.

The position calls for a versatile, respected individual with a proven record of research and business achievement. The individual should be able to provide critical leadership that will help empower the University through diversifying its revenue base so as to strengthen its academic and research funding. The Pro Vice Chancellor Research, Innovation and Enterprise Development will report to the Vice Chancellor.


The candidate should possess the following key competencies:

  1. Strategic thinking skills and progressive attitudes for effective articulation of the mission and goals of the University as these relate to business development
  2. Proven track record of business projects developed and implemented
  3. Demonstrable passion for business development and knowledge for project initiation
  4. An earned research doctorate (PhD), a Full Professor or Associate Professor would be an added advantage;
  5. A practitioner qualification in ODL at a certificate, diploma, or degree level would be an added advantage;
  6. A business-related qualification would be an added advantage;
  7. Demonstrable experience in commercialisation of ideas with business potential including establishment of an incubation centre
  8. Strong research and strategic business skills
  9. Ability to determine the current and future competition of the planned and or developed University business
  10. Capacity to develop criteria and systems for price regimes, product and service quality, product exposure, product improvement, etc
  11. Ability to negotiate with potential sponsors for business projects leading to joint ventures
  12. Innovative abilities to initiate, develop and maintain creative strategies in business development to address the financial challenges that confront the University in the twenty – first century
  13. Ability to create wealth and to assist in the development and implementation of the University business projects
  14. Ability to establish public and private partnerships to foster business relationships
  15. Ability and capacity to establish e- business
  16. Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills are essential;
  17. At least five (5) years working experience in a university or related environment, three (3) of which must be at Dean or Director;


He or she will be the person responsible for initiating, recommending, implementing and monitoring policies, systems and procedures dealing with University Innovations and Business Development and shall:

  1. Provide leadership in planning, implementation and evaluation of the University's strategic plan;
  2. Maintain an awareness of the goals and accomplishments of the University;
  3. Lead all research activities of the University (including copy rights and patents);
  4. Develop research collaborations and scholarship, inspiring the active mind and providing new tools and ways of thinking that lead to innovation and a research culture;
  5. Take a lead in identifying, cultivating and developing new funding partners, alliances and opportunities;
  6. Develop and overseeing budgets, policies and procedures for the research, innovation and enterprise development functions;
  7. Perform any other functions as may be delegated by the Vice-Chancellor.


The University offers;

  1. A negotiable attractive remuneration package in accordance with the University Terms and Conditions of Service.

3.2        Medical Aid, Leave and Pension benefits;

3.3        A three (3) year performance-related renewable contract.
