Walking the Talk: ZOU Champions Disability Inclusion at the National Disability Expo

The vibrant energy at Masvingo’s Mucheke Stadium is nothing short of breathtaking. From June 23 to 26, 2026, the Zimbabwe National Disability Expo has brought together over 500 innovators, creators, and advocates under a powerful banner: “Embracing Disability Inclusion in All Sectors – A Masterstroke for National Prosperity and Economic Development.”

For the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU), this isn’t just a theme, it is our heartbeat. True inclusivity is never an act of charity; it is the cornerstone of human dignity and national progress. The inspiring array of talent on display serves as a living testament to a simple, profound truth: disability is never inability.

At ZOU, we don’t just advocate for inclusion from the sidelines; we live it. We hold immense institutional pride in our seven dedicated students living with disabilities who are representing the university and enriching our academic community. Through our Open and Distance Flexible Learning (ODFL) model, we break down physical barriers, bringing the classroom directly to our learners so that physical challenges never stand in the way of academic excellence.

Our heart and soul are vividly represented at the ZOU stand this week. Supported by a passionate team of educators and student advisors including Professor S. Chimhenga, Dr. M. Ncube, Mr. Nyatsanza, Ms F. Sengai and Ms. E. Moyo.  Our incredible students are actively proving that they are essential drivers of Zimbabwe’s future.

Right at the stand, Mutimbanyoka Shingirayi Liberty is showcasing stunning beadwork in woven bags and key holders, while Bulagango Michael Ityaishe demonstrates the power of literacy by seamlessly navigating a Braille machine to read and type documents. Alongside them, the inspiring presence and diverse talents of fellow student exhibitors Vengedza Tranos, Maranda Victoria, Chodokufa Lizzie, Mupunwa Passmore, and Matatani Douglas remind us exactly why accessible education matters.

ZOU’s presence at Mucheke Stadium reaffirms our unwavering commitment to ensuring that our nation’s growth is truly collective. We invite you to step into our stand, connect with these brilliant minds, and join us in building a more inclusive, dignified, and prosperous Zimbabwe.
