RISE, SHINE, AND THRIVE: Heartfelt Moments as ZOU National Sports Tournament Roars to Life in Masvingo

There is a unique, undeniable magic that happens when a family reunites, and this morning, the Great Hall at Morgenster Teachers’ College was transformed into a sanctuary of hope, unity, and shared purpose. Under the chilly morning skies of Masvingo, students from all ten regional campuses of the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) converged for the Official Opening Ceremony of the 2026 ZOU National Sports Tournament.

It was an emotional, student-centered event that proved this tournament is about far more than just medals, it is about the beating heart of the university: its students.

This year’s tournament runs under a deeply moving and urgent theme: “Breaking the Silence, Rise, Shine and Thrive: Confronting the Hidden Challenges to Student Wellness.”

Students representing all 10 regional campuses gather in a packed Great Hall at Morgenster Teachers’ College, celebrating diversity and solidarity.

As the opening prayer faded and introductions were made, a powerful realization washed over the packed hall: while the world often only sees a student’s grades, many are silently carrying heavy, invisible burdens. From exam pressure and financial strain to chronic stress and anxiety, the cracks in student wellness are real, but today, ZOU vowed to face them together.

The morning’s presentations beautifully charted a course toward healing, unity, and resilience:

Capturing the moment: Ms. Chivasa delivering an inspiring and dynamic keynote address.

The Dean of Students, Ms Thandiwe Chivasa set a heartfelt tone for the day, noting that while trophies and medals are wonderful, the greatest achievements of the weekend will be the lifelong friendships built and the memories created. The Dean reminded everyone that this tournament is a call to look out for one another and ensure every student feels seen, heard, and supported. A warm, special welcome was also extended to the newly appointed Sports and Student Development Coordinator, Mr. Changa, a former SRC Sports Secretary whose journey from student leader to coordinator perfectly embodies the tournament’s spirit of growth.

Professor Paul Mupa, the Masvingo Campus Regional Director, then took to the podium to offer the official welcome to the host province, capturing the deeply sentimental spirit of the morning. His address was a warm embrace to the traveling contingents, focusing heavily on the indispensable values of fair play and togetherness. Professor Mupa reminded the athletes and cultural competitors that while they represent different regions, they belong to one singular ZOU family, emphasizing that true victory lies in how they lift each other up and play with absolute integrity.

Student Advisor Mr. Musona closed out the remarks by deeply unpacking the tournament’s core message. Delivering a stirring presentation that resonated profoundly with the young crowd, he noted, “Silence keeps problems heavy. Voice makes them manageable.” He urged the students to use the upcoming poetry, drama, and debate competitions to tell their authentic stories, concluding with a powerful charge: “We want you to be a warrior, not a victim. Step into your light, no matter what you are facing.”

With the opening remarks concluded and Professor Rupande announcing the venues for the various sporting codes, the emotional energy of the morning transitioned into creative fire.

The Great Hall and surrounding lecture rooms quickly came alive with competitions, including:

  • Intellectual and Artistic Battles: Heart-wrenching poetry, fierce debates, and dramatic performances aimed at destigmatizing mental health and student struggles.
  • Inclusivity in Action: Specialized disability activities ensuring that every single student has the platform to rise and shine.
  • Precision Sports: Intense dart competitions drawing cheers from passionate onlookers.

As the day progresses the message is loud, clear, and deeply comforting to every young person in attendance: You are seen, you are heard, and you no longer have to suffer in silence.

Let the games continue, and may every ZOU student leave Masvingo shining brighter than ever before
