ZOU Concludes Nationwide Integrity Crusade in Masvingo
MASVINGO – On a momentous Friday, 24 July 2026, the nationwide Integrity Pledge movement led by the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) reached its emotional crescendo at the Masvingo Regional Campus. Sweeping through the country’s provinces, this final leg served as a poignant reminder that behind every institutional mandate lie the hearts and consciences of real people.

En route to the Masvingo regional campus, Vice Chancellor Professor Paul H. Gundani made a meaningful stop at Great Zimbabwe University’s Mashava Campus. There, amidst the vibrant energy of the ongoing Chancellor Games, ZOU staff members took time out from competing on the field to sign their Integrity Pledges, proving that whether in suit and tie or sporting kit, an unwavering moral compass remains central to the university’s identity.

Delivering a deeply soul-stirring address, Professor Gundani looked beyond bureaucratic formalities, framing the pledge as an intimate, sacred pact. Returning to renew a vow ZOU first blazed in 2023 as the pioneer state university to sign the pledge, the Vice Chancellor spoke directly to the conscience of every educator, administrator, and student present.
“Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. It must be more than a principle. It must also be a culture and a habit. But more than that, a promise; a promise that we make first to ourselves, secondly to the institution which we work for, and thirdly, of course, to our colleagues.”
For Professor Gundani, integrity is not a cold rulebook, it is a living habit designed to protect the human dignity of every student, scholar, and community member ZOU touches.
With fatherly candor, the Vice Chancellor challenged students to reject the hollow thrill of shortcuts, plagiarism, and unearned certificates. He warned against “rote learning” and the passive “banking model” of education, urging learners to seek genuine, transformative knowledge that serves society.
Turning to the academics, he called for a compassionate shift away from punitive, adversarial testing toward mutual knowledge creation. He urged academics to embrace modern technology and Artificial Intelligence, not as threats, but as freeing tools to eliminate drudgery, modernize learning, and restore dignity to the craft of teaching.
