From Ideas to Impact: ZOU’s Inaugural Research Week Ignites a New Vision for Homegrown Innovation
On a crisp Friday morning at the Zimbabwe Open University’s (ZOU) Hatcliffe Campus in Harare, the typical quiet hum of academic lectures gave way to a vibrant atmosphere of purpose. Student inventors, academics, and industry experts gathered to mark a historic milestone: the official opening ceremony of ZOU’s Inaugural Research and Innovation Week (29–31 July 2026).

Guided smoothly by the Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing, Mrs. S. Moyo, who served as the Director of Ceremonies, the proceedings moved with precision and warmth. Held under the theme “From Ideas to Impact: Advancing Research and Innovation for National Transformation,” the event demonstrated how tertiary education is moving away from purely theoretical study toward practical, solution-driven innovation.

Welcoming guests and delegates, ZOU Vice Chancellor Professor Emeritus Paul Henry Gundani set an inspiring tone for the week during his welcome remarks and keynote address. Prof. Gundani highlighted ZOU’s strategic positioning and commitment to fostering heritage-based research under the university’s 2026–2030 strategic framework.
“This theme encapsulates the very essence of our collective mission, to harness knowledge, creativity, and enterprise to propel Zimbabwe toward sustainable development and prosperity,” stated Prof. Gundani.
He emphasized that ZOU’s Research, Innovation, and Enterprise Development (RIED) mandate is deeply rooted in heritage-based research, converting indigenous knowledge and local resources into commercial enterprises aligned with Vision 2030 and Education 5.0.

Prof. Gundani outlined ZOU’s core strategic focus areas for 2026–2030, which include strengthening heritage-based research capacity, establishing regional innovation hubs, protecting intellectual property, expanding digital learning ecosystems, and privatising university asset ventures like the ZOU Printing Press to build long-term sustainability.

Following the Vice Chancellor’s opening context, the Director of Higher Education Programmes, Dr. Dennis Murekachiro, stepped forward to introduce the Guest of Honour, the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Honourable Dr. F. N. Shava.
Minister Shava was ably represented by the Permanent Secretary for Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Professor Fanuel Tagwira, who delivered the Guest of Honour’s keynote address.
“Great nations are built not simply on brilliant ideas, but on their capacity to transform those ideas into innovations, enterprises, industries, and policies that improve the quality of life of their citizens. Prof. Tagwira commended ZOU for establishing practical ventures, such as the Avocado Processing Plant being established in Chimanimani and AI-powered distance learning platforms, proving that universities are becoming engines of national development rather than passive consumers of imported technology.
The event reached an exciting climax during the presentation of awards, where student innovators and regional campus teams were celebrated for practical inventions designed to address real societal needs:
