The Materials Development Unit (MDU) is a strategic value-addition arm of the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU), dedicated to enriching ZOU’s academic and corporate content, including modules, study guides, journals and marketing materials. As an Open and Distance e-Learning University, ZOU depends on MDU to bridge the lecturer-student gap through expertly crafted learning material resources.
MDU operates under the Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) and comprises three sections: Editorial, Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design. Its learning materials development follows a nine-stage process – writing, editing, layout, design, quality assurance, publishing, review, revision and ISBN registration. It also collaborates with faculties and the Teaching and Learning Centre to produce logically structured, self-assessing study guides. To support inclusive education, MDU converts learning materials into braille and audio formats for visually impaired students.
Beyond academics, MDU designs and edits university publications, promotional content and branded items for conferences and other outreach activities like exhibitions. It has evolved into a revenue-generating hub, offering short courses in Creative Design and Language Editing to internal and external clients.
Looking ahead, MDU will enhance content quality and accessibility through advanced editing, interactive design and strategic partnerships. It aims to boost University income through consultancy, micro-credentials and cutting-edge publishing.
