The journey of student leadership at the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) reached a pivotal milestone this week as the Student Representative Council (SRC) gathered for a high-impact induction workshop. Building the Foundation of Leadership

Friday, April 10th, marked the core academic and philosophical heart of the induction. After an early morning Senate meeting, the SRC engaged in an intensive leadership development session led by guest facilitator

The sessions focused on shifting the SRC’s perspective from symbolic representation to strategic governance. Key highlights from the day’s curriculum included:

  • Defining Purpose: Facilitator Ms. Odillne Kava (Vakoma) guided members through developing a Personal Leadership Philosophy and Vision, ensuring their individual goals align with the University’s mission to empower the world through high-quality open learning.
  • Effective Governance: The workshop unpacked the principles of student governance, stressing that the SRC is a critical component of the university’s overall structure.
  • Skills Mastery: Sessions were dedicated to Ethical Decision Making and Effective Communication, equipping the council to listen to student concerns and respond with integrity.
  • Leading with Impact: The day concluded with outdoor team-building activities designed to foster the Teamwork and Inclusivity required to lead a diverse student population.

A Commitment to Excellence

The University has set a high bar for this year’s council. As “custodians of commitment,” the SRC members are expected to embody ZOU’s shared values remaining client-driven, innovative, and accountable in every action they take.

“The University is watching,” the Pro-Vice Chancellor noted. “The students are depending on you. And the standard is high”.
