“Leadership is Service”: ZOU Senior Management Embraces New Performance Mandate
In a powerful demonstration of servant leadership, the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) Senior Management moved beyond rhetoric to concrete action. During a high-stakes signing ceremony held at Corner House on 5 February 2026, the university’s top leadership officially signed performance contracts, anchoring their roles in a profound commitment to the institution and the nation.

Guided by the Vice Chancellor’s call to action, the event was framed by the principled leadership ethos of His Excellency, President E.D. Mnangagwa, who famously articulated that “Leadership is about service, not privilege”.
The signing of these contracts is a strategic masterstroke designed to harmonize individual effort with national ambition. By formalizing these annual commitments, ZOU ensures that every leadership action resonates with:
- The National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2): Directly contributing to Zimbabwe’s vision of becoming a “Prosperous and Empowered Upper Middle-Income Society by 2030”.
- ZOU Strategic Plan 2026-2030: Strengthening the university’s capacity to deliver on its mandate as a premier Open and Distance Flexible Learning (ODFL) institution.
- Ministerial Synergy: Aligning institutional progress with the parent Ministry’s overarching strategic goals.
This initiative is more than an internal policy; it is a rigorous adherence to the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act [Cap 10:31]. Under Section 23 (1), senior staff are mandated to enter into these written agreements to ensure that high-level responsibilities are met with measurable results.
“By clearly defining our objectives and performance indicators, we ensure that every action we take is directed toward achieving our strategic goals.” Implored Professor Gundani.
To maintain momentum, the university has established a framework for continuous improvement. Leadership will not only be assessed annually but will undergo quarterly and bi-annual reflections to identify areas for innovation and growth. This culture of transparency is intended to build unwavering stakeholder trust in ZOU’s governance.
As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere was one of collaboration and renewed purpose. The Vice Chancellor expressed deep gratitude for the management team’s dedication, urging them to embrace this journey of transformation with integrity. With the 2026 contracts signed, ZOU stands ready to fulfill its mission of empowerment through excellence in higher education.
