The “Midas Touch” of ODFL: ZOU and NAMCOL Forge Strategic Alliance for Regional Educational Excellence
In a landmark move destined to reshape the landscape of higher education within the SADC region, the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) recently concluded a high-stakes familiarisation visit by the Namibia College of Open Learning (NAMCOL) from 27 to 29 April 2026. The three-day strategic engagement, held at ZOU’s Corner House headquarters, served as a powerful testament to the university’s growing influence as a continental pioneer in Open and Distance Flexible Learning (ODFL).

The visit was anchored by NAMCOL’s ambitious strategic pivot: evolving from a college into a fully-fledged Open University. Seeking a benchmark for excellence, the Namibian delegation, led by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ngepathimo Kadhila, identified ZOU as the ideal institutional mentor.
“We have come here not as visitors merely passing through, but as earnest students of institutional development,” remarked Dr. Kadhila, acknowledging ZOU’s journey from its inception as a distance education centre in 1993 to a world-class accredited university.
Welcoming the delegates, ZOU Vice Chancellor Professor Emeritus P.H. Gundani highlighted the university’s 25-year legacy of innovation. He emphasized that ZOU’s expertise, which he aptly termed the “Midas Touch” has historically empowered regional partners like the Botswana Open University (BOU) and the University of Zambia (UNZA) to achieve gold-standard results in distance education.
Aligning with the national mantra, “Zimbabwe is Open for Business,” Professor Gundani positioned the university as a hub for sustainable development and practical solutions that drive economic growth.
The intensive programme, directed by Mrs. S. Moyo, Director of Corporate Communications & Marketing, allowed the NAMCOL delegation to engage directly with ZOU’s diverse faculties and administrative powerhouses. Key areas of exploration included:
- Curriculum & Materials Development: Insights into how ZOU designs academic programmes within a robust ODFL framework.
- Research and Innovation: Strategies for increasing research visibility and fostering an “Enterprise Development” culture.
- Quality Assurance: Benchmarking against ISO 9001 standards and the African Council of Distance Education (ACDE) guidelines.
- Instructional Technology: A look at ZOU’s advanced Learning Management Systems and digital transformation initiatives.
The visit culminated in a facility tour of the Harare Regional Campus, showcasing ZOU’s unique decentralized model which brings education directly to the people via 10 provincial campuses and various district centres.
The primary takeaway from the engagement was a shared commitment to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This anticipated partnership will focus on joint programme development, shared research, and staff exchange, ensuring that both institutions continue to “empower through open learning”.
The NAMCOL delegation comprised of Ms Justina Nhoni (Senior Manager, Strategic Planning, Research and Quality Assurance); Dr. Ndeshi Afunde (Director, Student Support); Dr. Alberts Kul0b0ne (Director, Marketing, Enterprise Development and ICT); Ms Justina Kavale (Manager, Programme Development) and Mrs. Granny Samuel (Legal Advisor).
As the NAMCOL delegation departed on April 30, the air was thick with the promise of a revitalized regional education sector. This visit was more than a meeting of minds; it was the forging of a strategic alliance between two giants dedicated to eliminating educational bottlenecks across Namibia, Zimbabwe, and the wider SADC region.
