ZOU Concludes Nationwide Integrity Pledge Signing Campaign, Reaffirming Commitment to Ethical Leadership
The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) on Tuesday 26 August 2025 concluded its nationwide Integrity Pledge signing campaign, with a “mopping up” ceremony at ZOU Corner House in Harare. The event, which saw slightly above 130 members sign the pledge, brought the final tally of signatories to 688 staff members and 60 student leaders, solidifying the institution’s unified stand against corruption.

Led by Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Ermson Zuva Nyakatawa, the campaign’s strategic intention was to embed a culture of ethical conduct and transparency from the top down. By engaging every regional campus and culminating in today’s final signing, ZOU demonstrated that its commitment is comprehensive and institution-wide, not merely a symbolic gesture. The high participation rate from senior administration to student leaders shows the broad-based buy-in for ZOU’s ethical framework.
The impact of ZOU’s sustained efforts was highlighted by Ms. Tariro Kadzviti, Compliance and Systems Review Officer for the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC). Ms. Kadzviti praised ZOU as a “model for higher education and the nation at large,” noting that ZOU was the first university to adopt the National Integrity Pledge back in 2022. She emphasized that the annual renewal of these pledges, along with the establishment of the country’s first functional university integrity committee, signifies a living, breathing commitment to ethical principles.

“ZOU’s leadership in renewing these pledges underscores that integrity is an ongoing journey,” Ms. Kadzviti stated. “This is not a static act but a continuous process of nurturing ethical values. Such institutions are vital in the broader fight against corruption, as they shape societal values and foster future ethical leaders.”
The strategic decision to conduct a nationwide campaign and ensure high participation numbers underscores ZOU’s belief that integrity is crucial for national development and building “the Zimbabwe we want.” By making ethical conduct a core pillar of its identity, ZOU is not only setting a powerful example for other institutions but is also actively cultivating a generation of leaders and professionals who will carry these values forward, creating a tangible impact on the nation’s future.
