ZOU Hosts Mauritian Delegation to Forge Strategic Partnerships
In a landmark meeting held at Corner House, the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) hosted a high-level delegation from Mauritius to explore transformative partnerships within the university’s burgeoning innovation ecosystem. The event, themed around regional collaboration and industrialization, underscored ZOU’s vision to be the “University of choice in Open and Distance Flexible Learning”.
The proceedings, moderated by Master of Ceremonies Mrs. S. Moyo, commenced with the National Anthem and a University Prayer led by the Registrar. Following introductions from ZOU, and the Mauritian representatives, the stage was set for a series of high-level addresses aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

The visiting delegation was led by Dr. Dinesh Surroop, Director General of the Open University of Mauritius. In his welcome remarks, ZOU Vice Chancellor Professor Emeritus P.H. Gundani emphasized that the visit serves as a catalyst for sustainable development and practical solutions that drive economic growth.
“New nations established their own Universities because they need a type of higher education appropriate to their problems and their aspirations,” Professor Gundani stated, quoting the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. “The kind of problems examined at a university… should vary according to the background and anticipated requirements of the students“.
The Vice Chancellor highlighted five key “hubs” that serve as the pillars of ZOU’s innovation ecosystem:
- Technovation Hub (Harare): The heart of the university’s digital transformation, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), 3D immersive environments, and cloud-based systems to nurture startups and market-ready products.
- Kadoma Agro-Industrial Park: A facility dedicated to empowering small-scale farmers through modern horticulture techniques and training.
- Masvingo Methane Gas Project: A green initiative focused on harvesting methane from waste to provide sustainable, clean energy solutions.
- Chimanimani Avocado Farm: A strategic project aimed at boosting national export diversification and rural economic empowerment.
- Chitomborwizi Network: An applied research platform targeting real-world agricultural challenges to enhance community resilience.
The visit signals a strengthening of ties between Zimbabwe and Mauritius, leveraging heritage-based solutions and local resources to foster inclusive development.
Professor Gundani reaffirmed ZOU’s alignment with the national mantra, “Zimbabwe is Open for Business,” inviting the delegates to explore potential collaborations that leverage local skills and natural resources. Before a final photo session, the Vice Chancellor encouraged the guests to enjoy Harare’s historical monuments and “fair-weather conditions”.
