ZOU Ignites New Era of Learning: 12-Month Countdown to ZOU FM 2027 Begins

The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) has officially triggered a 12-month countdown to the launch of ZOU FM, following a high-impact exhibition at the 2026 World Radio Day celebrations held at Tongogara Refugee Camp on 13 February 2026.

The university’s delegation turned the event into a strategic powerhouse, recording over 1,000 prospective student enquiries in a single day, signaling a massive appetite for accessible higher education in the Manicaland region.

The event, headlined by the Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Hon. Zhemu Soda, featured the UNESCO-sponsored launch of Tongogara FM. For ZOU, the occasion served as a vital benchmarking mission to fine-tune its own broadcasting ambitions.

In alignment with the global theme, “Radio and Artificial Intelligence,” ZOU demonstrated its pivot toward a “high-tech, high-touch” ODFL (Open and Distance Flexible Learning) model. To overcome the connectivity challenges of remote locations, the university’s Corporate Communications & Marketing Unit has recommended deploying Starlink satellite kits for all future outreach, ensuring “Always-On” connectivity regardless of geography.

The university has already moved to cement its operational framework, securing consultative meetings with the Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS). This partnership aims to ensure ZOU FM transcends into being a marketing tool to become a transformative vehicle for distance education.

“This wasn’t just an exhibition; it was a statement of intent,” said Mr. Clemence Mabaso, Director of ZOU Campus Radio. “ZOU FM will be the bridge between rural accessibility and academic excellence, bringing the classroom directly to the people.”
