ZOU Reaffirms Commitment to Ethical Excellence at 2026 Integrity Pledge Ceremony

Strengthening its position as a national leader in ethical governance, the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) held its annual Integrity Pledge signing ceremony on Monday, 9 February 2026, at its Hatcliffe Campus. The event served as a powerful reaffirmation of the university’s dedication to honesty, transparency, and accountability.

ZOU Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Henry Gundani reaffirms his pledge to integrity, in front of the  Legal Manager Dr. Tapiwa Kasuso

In a keynote address, the Vice Chancellor emphasized that integrity is the bedrock of any great institution. “Integrity is more than a principle. It is a habit. It is a culture. And it is a promise we make not only to others, but also to ourselves,” the Vice Chancellor stated. The ceremony was described not merely as a formality, but as a public declaration to uphold the highest ethical standards in every administrative duty and academic endeavor.

The concept of reaffirmation was the cornerstone of the event. Rather than viewing the pledge as a one-time obligation, the university treated the ceremony as a vital renewal of its moral contract. The Vice Chancellor noted that while reputations are built over decades, they can be destroyed in moments, making the constant, active renewal of ethical commitment essential for the university’s survival and dignity.

This year’s ceremony focused on moving beyond compliance to internal conviction. By gathering senior management, staff, and students, ZOU sought to “re-anchor” its community in its core values, ensuring that the promise made years ago remains a living, breathing part of the daily campus culture.

ZOU continues to lead the way for higher education institutions in Zimbabwe. Its history of commitment is marked by several key milestones:

  • 2023: ZOU became the first state university in Zimbabwe to sign the Integrity Pledge.
  • 2025: The university seamlessly transitioned when the pledge became a national annual exigency.
  • 2026: Today’s ceremony confirms ZOU’s role as a “trailblazer” in anti-corruption initiatives.

The event was attended by members of the ZOU Integrity Committee, further validating the university’s proactive stance against cheating, plagiarism, and corruption.

The Vice Chancellor’s call to action aligned with the national vision, citing recent presidential emphasis that a nation’s progress depends heavily on the integrity of its citizens and leaders. Addressing the community directly, he urged those who had not yet signed the pledge to do so “wholeheartedly,” noting that the act reflects the institution’s very identity.

As the ceremony concluded, the university reaffirmed its goal to be distinguished not only by academic excellence but by a shared dedication to ethical leadership that will define the legacy of the university for years to come.
