ZOU Reaffirms Commitment to Ethical Excellence at Bulawayo Integrity Pledge Ceremony
ZOU Vice-Chancellor Prof. P. H. Gundani delivers the keynote address, emphasizing that ethical conduct is the true measure of academic empowerment at the Bulawayo Regional Campus.
Bulawayo — A university degree is far more than a piece of paper; it is a solemn promise of competence, character, and hard-earned knowledge. On July 22, 2026, the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) doubled down on that promise at its Bulawayo Regional Campus during its official Integrity Pledge Signing Ceremony.
Bringing together executive leadership, academic staff, and student leaders, the landmark event served as a powerful declaration that ethical conduct isn’t just an administrative requirement. It is the ultimate foundation of true empowerment and academic success.
Following an opening prayer by Ms. B. Mugandani and welcome introductions by Professor A. Chitando, ZOU Vice-Chancellor Professor P. H. Gundani delivered a compelling keynote address on what true integrity demands in today’s modern academic environment.
Addressing a packed delegation of students, lecturers, and administrative staff, Prof. Gundani cautioned that shortcuts, whether through examination misconduct, plagiarism, or the misuse of emerging technologies, ultimately rob students of their actual education.
“Integrity is more than a principle. It is a habit, a culture, and a public declaration before our peers that we choose to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct,” Prof. Gundani emphasized. “When we compromise integrity, we compromise our future.”
The Vice-Chancellor reminded student leaders that while the temptation to find easy routes through assignments or exams exists, true, lasting value lies in entering the job market with genuine capability rather than credentials devoid of real knowledge.

Executed in direct partnership with the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZOU/ZACC CLIP), the ceremony systematically unpacked the practical governance and compliance frameworks required to combat academic dishonesty, research fraud, and administrative misconduct across higher education.
ZOU continues to blaze a trail in ethical leadership across Zimbabwe’s tertiary sector. In 2023, ZOU earned the distinction of becoming the first state university in the country to formally adopt the Integrity Pledge.
