ZOU Vice Chancellor Blazes the Trail in the Democratisation of Knowledge

The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emeritus Paul Henry Gundani, together with his office team of the Executive Director, Mr. Benson Gabi, and the Senior Research Fellow, Rev. Dr. Gift Masengwe, broke ranks by publishing a chapter on open education at Zimbabwe Open University (Chapter 12) in the first ever, Handbook of Open Universities Around the World, by the prestigious Routledge Publishers (Francis and Taylor Group).

In a rapidly shifting global landscape, ZOU has emerged as a trailblazer on how innovative technology can revolutionise higher education in addition to blazing the trail in Quality Assurance (QA) in higher education. A groundbreaking (new) study on Zimbabwe Open University featured among the 57 chapters in the Handbook of Open Universities Around the World, highlights how ZOU is successfully harnessing the power of Open and Distance Electronic Learning (ODeL) to break down traditional barriers, promote social inclusion, and drive sustainable economic growth (through modernisation). ODeL is redefining access to quality education and shaping a brighter future for communities across Zimbabwe and beyond.

The compelling journey of ZOU as chronicled in Chapter 12, exemplifies a remarkable transformation from a modest correspondence-based institution to a dynamic, digital-first powerhouse. This evolution has revolutionised higher education, empowering individuals who were once marginalised by colonial-era restrictions, or geographical barriers.

A Journey of Transformation

Since its inception in 1993 as the Centre for Distance Education (CDE), ZOU has steadily expanded its horizons, culminating in its recognition as a full-fledged state university in 1999. Embracing innovation and adaptability, the university continued to evolve, and in 2019, it took a giant leap forward by rebranding itself as an ODeL institution. This strategic shift marked a new chapter – one rooted in cutting-edge technology and a steadfast commitment to democratising education and fostering lifelong learning for all.

Today, the university operates under the Heritage-Based Education (HBE) 5.0 philosophy. This innovative framework moves beyond mere classroom instruction, integrating:

  • Teaching and Research: Contributing to new knowledge across all generations.
  • Community Service: Addressing local challenges through national and regional partnerships.
  • Innovation and Industrialisation: Equipping students with the skills needed to modernize Zimbabwe’s economy.

The Digital Campus: Access Without Borders

The researchers clearly highlight ZOU’s philosophy of “no physical boundaries” that have revolutionised access to higher education. Through the cutting-edge Learning Management System (LMS), MyVista, and a dynamic blended learning approach, higher education has become available wherever the student is – truly portable and accessible.

  • Regional Impact: With ten strategically located centers in every provincial city, ZOU seamlessly extends its reach to student’s doorsteps, turning geographical limits into steppingstones. The virtual campus (region) takes ZOU to students outside Zimbabwe.
  • Flexible Engagement: From paying fees, accessing digital libraries, to submitting assignments online, students enjoy freedom to learn on their own terms – balancing studies with career and family life commitments with ease.
  • Championing Gender Inclusivity: Notably women contribute 60% of total enrollments from 2019 to 2023, highlighting ZOU’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic environment.

Future Proofing Education

While the institution faces external challenges such as economic volatility, it continues to pioneer in futuristic approaches that navigate turbulent external forces with unshakeable resilience through robust Quality Assurance (QA) mechanisms. Through QA and technological innovation, ZOU has not only future proofed its qualifications but has also become a trendsetter in the region, achieving global standards with its dedicated QA unit. This bold commitment to inclusivity, embodied in the “leaving no one behind”, makes the institution a living, breathing and feeling reality to thousands of its learners across the region and the world through a flexible, learner-centered mission.

The authors of the chapter conclude that ZOU’s commitment to “leaving no one behind” is more than a slogan, but a functional reality driven by technological innovation and a flexible, learner-centred mission.
