ZOU Vice Chancellor Commissions New Fleet to Power Regional Growth

In a decisive move to bolster its nationwide operations, the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) today officially commissioned a new vehicle fleet dedicated to its Regional Campuses and Faculties. The handover ceremony, held at the National Centre, marks a critical milestone in the university’s strategic mission to decentralize excellence and enhance academic supervision across Zimbabwe.

ZOU Senior Management, Deans, and Regional Directors, follow proceedings during the fleet handover ceremony in the ZOU 2nd Floor Boardroom.

Addressing Senior Management, Deans, and Regional Directors, Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Henry Gundani emphasized that this acquisition is a strategic investment in the university’s human and intellectual capital.

This ceremony symbolizes our institutional commitment to equitable resource distribution,” Professor Gundani stated. “We are empowering our campuses to ensure that no student or faculty member is left behind due to logistical barriers.”

The Vice Chancellor outlined three core areas where the fleet will have immediate impact:

  • Unrivaled Mobility: Seamlessly bridge the gap between the National Centre and Regional hubs.
  • Academic Rigor: Powering robust research and enhancing on-the-ground academic supervision.
  • Agile Service Delivery: Ensuring administrative functions are as flexible and responsive as the Open and Distance Flexible Learning (ODFL) model demands.

The ceremony spotlighted two unique models of institutional growth that the Vice Chancellor urged other departments to emulate:

  1. Regional Integration: One commuter omnibus was acquired through a South-to-South Cooperation initiative with the University of Zambia (UNZA), showcasing the strength of SADC-level academic partnerships.
  2. Entrepreneurial Success: The Faculty of Applied Social Sciences (FASS) received high praise for independently funding its own omnibus through revenue generated from its short-course initiatives, a testament to ZOU’s drive toward self-sustainability.

The Vice Chancellor acknowledged the Registrar’s office for its forward-thinking leadership in spearheading the fleet expansion. He further revealed that this is the first phase of a comprehensive allocation plan designed to equip all Regional Directors and Deans with the necessary tools for effective leadership.

In a moving vote of thanks, Dr. T. Zinyama described the vehicles as “tools for transformation” that bring the university’s heart closer to its students.

As these vehicles depart for the corners of our nation, they serve as a rolling testament to our motto: ‘NeZOU Zvinoita,” Dr. Zinyama concluded.

The event closed with a technical orientation led by Acting Transport Manager Mr. Daniel Murewa, and his team ensuring that these vital institutional assets are managed with the highest standards of stewardship.
