ZOU Nears Finalisation of Strategic Blueprint at Masvingo Workshop

The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is on the cusp of finalizing its strategic direction for the next five years, following a highly productive fourth day of its intensive planning workshop. The session, held at the Ancient City Lodge, saw the consolidation of all prior discussions into a comprehensive draft of the ZOU Strategic Plan (2026-2030) and its accompanying 2026 Annual Plan.

Under the expert guidance of facilitators from the Public Service Academy and ZOU’s Dr. P. Mutanho, the day’s proceedings were marked by a decisive shift from analysis to actionable planning. The morning session was dedicated to refining the core strategies that will propel the university forward.

Participants engaged in a robust report-back on “Strategies, Assumptions, Risks and Mitigation,” a critical exercise that moved the workshop from defining ambitions to outlining practical, resilient pathways for achieving them. This foundational work, developed in syndicate groups, formed the essential scaffolding for the strategic plan.

“The collaborative energy in the room is translating directly into the quality of the draft documents,” a participant noted, highlighting the workshop’s participatory nature.

Following a break, the focus turned to synthesis. The facilitation team, led by the Public Service Academy and Dr. Mutanho, steered the presentation of the consolidated draft strategic plan. This was immediately followed by the development of the detailed 2026 Annual Plan, which breaks down the five-year vision into focused, first-year objectives to ensure immediate implementation.

The afternoon was dedicated to defining success with precision. In a session on “Annual Plan Performance Matrices,” groups established clear, measurable indicators and targets for 2026. This process ensures that the plan’s progress can be systematically tracked, fostering accountability and demonstrating tangible results.

The workshop concludes today with the formal adoption of the ZOU Strategic Plan 2026-2030, the 2026 Annual Plan, and the 2026 Performance Contracts for the Vice Chancellor and Chairperson of Council, setting a definitive course for the university’s future.
