Minister of Higher Education Commends Zimbabwe Open University’s Innovative Projects at ZITF 2024

In a remarkable display of support for cutting-edge research and development in the education sector, Professor Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, paid a visit to the Zimbabwe Open University’s stand at the ongoing Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) 2024.

During his visit, the Minister lauded the University’s Community Engagement Unit for its remarkable social innovation journey, specifically highlighting its collaboration with the First Lady, Dr. Auxilia Munangagwa’s Angel of Hope Foundation.

Professor Murwira took a keen interest in the technological booth station at the University’s stand, where he was introduced to three groundbreaking projects that have been developed by the institution’s innovative team. One of the standout projects showcased at the University’s stand was the Combined Health, Exercise and Power Generation Bicycle. This groundbreaking initiative integrates health and exercise with power generation, offering a sustainable solution to promote physical fitness while generating electricity for communities.

Another noteworthy project is the  Smart Fire Detection and Extinguishing System. This cutting-edge system utilizes advanced technology to detect fires early and respond swiftly to extinguish them, potentially revolutionizing fire safety practices and saving lives.

The Developed Artificial Intelligence, Tomatoes Disease Detection and Remedy System was also highlighted for its innovative approach. Leveraging artificial intelligence, this project accurately detects diseases in tomato plants and provides tailored remedies to combat the issues , promising significant benefits for farmers and increased crop yields.

Impressed by the potential impact of these projects, Professor Murwira emphasized the crucial role of universities in driving innovation and societal change. He commended the Zimbabwe Open University for its commitment to excellence in research and development, expressing his support for initiatives that have a tangible positive impact on communities.

In his address, Professor Murwira encouraged the University to continue the innovative projects and explore further avenues for collaboration and partnerships. He emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives that have a tangible positive impact on communities and reiterated the President’s  vision for Education 5.0, which embraces technology and innovation in education.
